Visiting the Station
The
Lwiro station can be reached via Rwanda. There are numerous international
flights into Kigali. One can also travel by land from Uganda, crossing
through Rwanda. From Kigali, there is reasonably good paved road that
goes to Cyangugu, Rwanda which lies on the southern shores of Lake Kivu,
just across the Ruzizi river from Bukavu, D.R.C. Much of this road passes
through heavily populated agricultural land with several major towns including
Butare, sight of an important regional university. It also passes by the
National Museum of Rwanda.
For the last third of the trip, the road
passes through Nyungwe forest, a spectacular piece of the eastern Albertine
Rift. In ths forest, which is soon to be declared a national park,
