The road also passes a large montane swamp that hosts a large population of Grauer's Brush Warbler (Bradypterus graureri). This road may provide the easiest access to Albertine Rift forest anywhere.

The travel time for this road varies depending on the type of vehicle, but it takes about five to seven hours to reach Cyangugu. There are several hotels near the border, which is open from 9:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. daily. Currently, a $30 fee is charged for an entry visa and you must leave your passport at the border. Although the vaccine is no longer considered important in many parts of the world, having documentation of the Cholera vaccine might save you some money.

There used to be many hotels in Bukavu,

but many are no longer functional after so many years with no tourism. A room may run as much as $90/ night. The Lwiro station can be reached by hiring a taxi in Bukavu. Make sure that people at the station know you are coming.

Lwiro lies 40 km to the northwest of Bukavu andl takes over an hour on a rough partially paved road. The road passes the turnoff to Tchivanga, the main station for Kahuzi-Biega National Park. This road goes through the park and continues west to Irangi, the site of a former research facility out in the Congo Basin (and the former cottage the Belgian King Cottage of Leopold II).
